7 Traditional Cretan Dishes That Are Already Vegan

One of the best-kept secrets of travelling vegan in Crete is that much of the traditional diet is already plant-based — a legacy of Orthodox fasting (nistia) and a cuisine built on vegetables, pulses and olive oil. Here’s what to look for on any taverna menu.

1. Gigantes plaki

Giant butter beans baked in a rich tomato and herb sauce. Ask if they’re cooked without meat stock (usually they are).

2. Fava

A silky split-pea purée topped with olive oil, onion and capers. Naturally vegan and deeply satisfying.

3. Horta

Boiled wild greens with lemon and olive oil — the ultimate Cretan side dish.

4. Dolmades

Vine leaves stuffed with rice and herbs. Many versions are vegan — just confirm there’s no minced meat and no egg-lemon (avgolemono) sauce.

5. Gemista

Tomatoes and peppers stuffed with herbed rice, baked until sweet. Ask for the version without cheese.

6. Dakos

Barley rusk (paximadi) topped with grated tomato, olive oil and oregano — ask them to leave off the mizithra cheese.

7. Briam

A slow-baked medley of summer vegetables in olive oil, similar to ratatouille.

A handful of Greek helps: “Nistisimo?” — is it suitable for fasting, with no animal products? — is understood almost everywhere and is your fastest route to a great vegan meal.
